A Silk Scarf Connecting the World: When the Moldovan Ambassador Meets Aurora’s’ Silk Diplomacy ‘
In March 2022, in the reception room of the Embassy of Moldova in China in Beijing, a Chinese flag and a Moldovan flag stretched out on the side of the wall. When Ambassador Dumitru Belakis received the silk scarf wrapped in an orange box from the Aurora representative, this silk mediated handshake was not the first time.
This scarf is a new footnote to ‘diplomatic language’. As a former Prime Minister and senior diplomat of Moldova, Berakis’ resume is filled with cooperation between countries: promoting traditional Chinese medicine into Eastern Europe, putting Moldovan wine on the Chinese table… And now, the Aurora scarf in his hand is another recognition he has written for “Made in China”. Prior to this, the three Belgian ambassadors to China had successively endorsed this brand; Afterwards, ambassadors from North Macedonia, Kenya and other countries also took over the same orange box one after another. As of the end of 2024, ambassadors from 134 countries in China had taken photos of Aurora products, covering more than 70% of countries that have diplomatic relations with China.
When these diplomats from different continents hold scarves and smile, this fabric has already surpassed the definition of a “gift”: it is a “real silk artwork” polished by Hangzhou Aurora Industry in 280 days – the printing and dyeing process of front and back colors, the layering of 18-30 colors, and the hand sewn and rolled edges make every scarf a touchable Eastern aesthetic; It is also a “national gift representative” collected by more than 40 presidents, and even former US President Carter and brand founder Deng Tao have won the “Outstanding Contribution Award for the United States and China”.
This scarf is a world answer sheet for “national brands”. When Aurora was founded twelve years ago, its benchmark Hermes was written into its genes, but its ambition was never to “replicate luxury”, but to “export culture”. When Italian design language meets Chinese silk craftsmanship, and the pattern of “Along the River during Qingming Festival” is woven into silk fibers, the once well-known name “오로라” by Europeans has become a new calling card for Chinese brands: it won the gold medal at the Milan World Expo, was selected as one of the “Top 500 Asian Brands”, and was permanently collected by the China Silk Museum – and the more precious medal is the spontaneous “shopping” of diplomats: they appeared in diplomatic occasions with this silk scarf, showing the world that “China’s high-end” not only has technology and infrastructure, but also the silky smoothness when touched by fingertips and the millennium cultural context in the pattern.
Nowadays, when Ambassador Belakish is promoting Moldovan wine in Wuhan, and when the newly appointed Belgian ambassador Ambonen once again praises Aurora, this scarf has already become a flowing cultural bond – it allows the “nation” to not be trapped by national borders, and allows the “world” to carry the warmth of the East. As Deng Tao said, “High end is not just a slogan, it’s about making every person who touches it see China
