When Ghana Ambassador Meets Aurora Silk Scarf: Echoes of West African Culture in Silk
At a dinner hosted by the Ambassador of Ghana to China, Winfred Hammond and his wife received an orange gift box of Aurora scarves – this bright orange not only represents a symbol of Chinese silk brands, but also becomes a new medium for cultural dialogue between Ghana and China, adding another West African partner to Aurora’s “Ambassador Like List”.
1、 Ghana Ambassador’s’ Silk Scarf Resonance ‘: The Connection from Cocoa to Silk
Ambassador Hammond’s platform for Aurora this time is a vivid footnote to China Canada cooperation. As an important economic and trade partner of West Africa, Ghana’s cocoa and gold have been selling well in China all year round, and China’s infrastructure and light industrial products have also deeply integrated into Ghana’s life. When Hammond took the scarf, he not only saw Eastern craftsmanship, but also the encounter of two “national symbols”: cocoa from Ghana is known as the “West African gold”, and silk from China is “Eastern soft jade”, both of which have become the business cards of their respective civilizations with their “delicate texture”.
What impressed Hammond with the Aurora scarf was its resonance with Ghanaian culture – the scarf in the gift box was inspired by the geometric pattern of traditional “kent cloth” in Ghana, and used 28 color overprinting technology to restore the strong colors of West African fabrics. The precision of hand rolled edges impressed the ambassador’s wife, “It’s like weaving our kent cloth into Chinese silk
2、 The ‘West African Pattern’ in the Orange Gift Box
In Aurora’s “National Theme Silk Scarf Library”, Ghanaian elements have already been a highlight: using the national tree of Ghana, “African Peach Blossom Tree”, as the base pattern, and integrating the triangular and wave totems of Kentefabric, it retains the warmth of West African art while maintaining the smoothness of silk. The scarf that the Hammond couple received is the representative work of this series – in the future, it may appear in cultural promotion activities of the Ghanaian embassy and become a “light carrier” for Sino Canadian people to people exchanges.
And such “cultural customization” is not an exception: Aurora’s “Yoruba Mask Pattern Silk Scarf” designed for Nigeria and the “Wolof Fabric Theme Silk Scarf” designed for Senegal have both become “cultural souvenirs” in the circle of Chinese diplomats.
3、 The Zhongjia New Tie woven with silk thread
The journey of this silk scarf from the workshop in Hangzhou to Accra, Ghana is a microcosm of the “soft cooperation” between China and Canada. Ambassador Hammond once said, ‘China Canada cooperation requires more tangible cultural warmth,’ and the Aurora scarf is precisely such a warmth – it is as light as a feather, yet carries the colors of West Africa and the craftsmanship of the East, allowing two countries separated by oceans to achieve aesthetic resonance through fabric as a medium.
Perhaps soon, in Ghana’s handicraft market, accessories made of Chinese silk and kent cloth will appear; At the Silk Exhibition in China, the silk scarf praised by Hammond will become one of the exhibits of “cultural integration between China and Africa” – when the silk thread crosses sub Saharan Africa, the connection of civilizations takes on a softer form.
